Much of the advice about preparing for conception is directed at women but that should not be the case. It is just as important that the father be prepared to adjust his lifestyle to increase the chances of fathering a healthy baby.
The first consideration should be his health. He should stop smoking now too (tobacco and anything else) and cut down alcohol consumption. Dads to be should also watch their weight, as carrying a few extra pounds can have quite an adverse effect on their own fertility. To ensure that his sperm are as healthy as possible he should also avoid long hot tub soaks and tight fitting underwear. The idea is to keep the groin as cool as possible to avoid damaging sperm.
Diet matters too. Several studies recently have shown that for men a diet high in antioxidants improved sperm quality. Good antioxidant laden foods include berries, broccoli, tomatoes and spinach.
Another small study suggests that soy products may not be good for a man’s sperm but basically following a healthy, balanced diet should be enough. Some doctors are recommending that men take the same folic acid supplements that women trying to conceive are advised to these days, as folate can improve the genetic clarity of sperm.
Certainly one of the most popular ways to increase sperm count and improve the chances of conception is to have sex every 24 or at least 48 hours. Ejaculating at least once a day keeps the male reproductive system working efficiently and helps prevent sperm from dying.
